Paver Sealing Is Important, But So Is Good Maintenance

paver sealing

Paver sealing protects against the elements (sun, rain, wind) and any other foreign objects that may fall on your pavers. Sealing creates an invisible barrier on the surface which repels oil, water and anything that people may drop accidentally on your pool deck or driveway, as long as you wash it off quickly. Sealing also protects your pavers’ natural beauty for many years.

With the right paver sealing products, joint sand can be locked in, thus protecting your pavers from weeds sprouting or creeping through.

When a sealer is applied, it can enhance the aesthetics of pavers by darkening the original color. There are also sealing products to get pavers to shine beautifully. Darker colors will have a more obvious sheen than lighter ones. Although this is another benefit that comes with paver sealing, it is not the main purpose.

In addition to sealing, periodic washing is required to keep the area clean, especially driveways. Motor oil, hydraulic fluids and gasoline spills should be removed with a recommended product. Previously sealed surfaces should be professionally cleaned and resealed about every 3 years, depending on traffic and environmental exposure.

Tip: Test if your pavers need resealing by turning on the hose and seeing if water beads up on the surface. If it doesn’t, a fresh coat may be needed.
