Travertine Sealing – Fact or Fiction?

Travertine SealingHere’s one of the most frequently asked questions from homeowners: “Is travertine sealing really necessary?” The answer is yes; all tile and natural stone products, even porcelain, benefit from sealing. As the name implies, travertine sealing tightly seals the surface for protection against water, chemicals and other contaminants.

Penetrating/impregnator sealers are surface treatment products that don’t alter the look of natural substrate. An impregnator won’t show scuffing or scratching, and it does not need constant attention to maintain its quality. Reapplication of travertine sealing can range from 6 months to 20 years, depending on the surface and substrate location, as well as the manufacturing process.

To be sure that a product performs as promised, ask for independent backup about claims made. Manufacturers should send their products for testing at independent labs. If the results favor specific needs, then you can assume the product is good.

Surfaces that benefit from sealing include: quarry tile, grout, some glazed tile, ceramic tile, some porcelain tile, travertine, granite, slate, limestone, terrazzo, brick, sandstone, quartz, concrete, flagstone, terra-cotta, masonry, and all types of cast tile and natural stone products.

An impregnator sealant will resist algae, mildew, mold, grease, oils, water, efflorescence, cement grout film, epoxy grout film, grout dyes, acid rain, mortar haze, soap scum, lime deposits, atmospheric dirt, and other penetrating substances. Moreover, many sealants make the surface harder, less slippery and facilitate 100 percent vapor transmission.
