Natural Stone Sealing: Why, When, and Other Tips

stone sealingNatural stones have different levels of porosity due to their geological formation and mineral composition. In other words, the process by which they were formed and where they were formed will affect the level of porosity. To some degree, all types of natural stones are porous because they have veins or swirls that tend to be absorbent. Therefore, stone sealing is very important.

When it comes to cleaning, you should use a product that has been specially formulated for natural stone. All-purpose cleaners can damage natural stone, and if a sealant has been applied, that too can be damaged. Even products that are designed to clean tiles or porcelain can etch the surface of natural stone.

What about spills? Of course, no matter how careful you are, they are going to happen. The problem is that if spills are left unattended for long periods of time, they can cause damage. So again, it is important to use a product that won’t cause damage after natural stone sealing has been performed. Fast reaction and a proper product will prevent spills from harming natural stone and/or degrading the sealer.

Remember that, for all spills, you’ll want to remove as much of the substance as possible without letting it spread. This can be done with a non-abrasive nylon brush or a soft sponge. Then simply wipe the affected area with a recommended cleaning product.
